Modesto, Calif. – The Valley Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Doctors Medical Center is proud to announce it has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for our program, as well as our faculty, staff and residents. Receiving this accreditation demonstrates our commitment and dedication to being among the nation’s best programs for graduate medical education and training,” said Marc Trzeciak, D.O., founding director of the orthopedic surgery residency, who was recently elected into the American Orthopaedic Association’s Council of Orthopaedic Residency Directors to serve as a leader in shaping orthopedic academic teaching across the country.

All medical residency programs around the country must receive accreditation by the ACGME under a new Single Accreditation System (SAS) that goes into effect in 2020. This accreditation system will allow graduates of M.D. and D.O. medical schools to complete their residency at any ACGME-accredited programs.

To receive full accreditation, ACGME utilizes a rigorous application process that requires staff to provide proof that the standard requirements are being met. These include curriculum standards, faculty credentials and adequate volume of patients.

“We are proud of our program and want people to know we are training the future of orthopedic surgery right here in the Central Valley. We continue to attract talented and prestigious students,” Dr. Trzeciak said. “Our residents continue to match into competitive fellowships and we would love to see them come back and practice with us.”

Jesua Law, D.O., who will be graduating this winter, will start his training in Orthopedic Adult Reconstruction in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the Hofmann Arthritis Institute. He will then continue his training at the Joint Implant Surgeons fellowship in New Albany, Ohio.

Brooke Hayashi, D.O., who will graduate in the summer of 2019, will be completing her pediatric orthopedic surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland.

As we announced in March, Jacob Duncan, D.O., matched into the orthopedic trauma fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He was the only D.O. interviewed this year for the fellowship and is the first D.O. they have ever accepted.

Doctors Medical Center is set to have 16 orthopedic surgery residents for the upcoming academic year. Nearly 200 applications were submitted to the program this year, which is the highest number of applications the program has received to date.

Being a teaching hospital – in both orthopedics and family medicine – means Doctors Medical Center is attracting the best and the brightest to the Central Valley. These doctors are bringing their knowledge of the latest in healthcare to our communities and with it, excellent patient care. Teaching facilities typically have a much higher caliber of medical staff and are challenged to stay up-to-date in evidence-based practices.
